"Our Famous Onion Rings" Known the world over for their flavor the video above describes our process for making this delicious appetizer.

The "Old Warehouse"

Located at 400 North Whitewoman Street, Roscoe Village, Ohio

Built in 1831, this "Old Warehouse" was used to store large quantities of grain, hides, wool and produce. There was a dry goods store on the upper level. Known as the"Mill Store" in the 1830's, this was the natural place for canal travelers to acquire those necessities needed to continue their trip. On a peak day, there would be several canal boats lined up along the canal at the rear of the warehouse to be unloaded.

Today the building has been restored to provide the best in dining in an atmosphere reminiscent of the old canal days.

The Original "Steak n' Stein"
In 1951, the building located at 3190 Frazeysburg Road opened as "The Steak n' Stein" way past the city limits of Zanesville and surrounded by farmland. Oscar Larson and Ray (Bud) Arnold, who were brothers-in-law, bought the building from Harold Mizer and Fred Quigley.

They operated a tavern known as "Fred and Harold's" there for a couple of years. The "Steak n' Stein" became a popular daytime and nighttime spot for people from Zanesville, Frazeysburg and Dresden.

For many years beyond, the Arnold Family continued to operate the "Steak n' Stein" until 1999.
The Warehouse Steak n' Stein
is two long-time friends' vision to renew a love for the great food and atmosphere of the "Steak n' Stein" of Zanesville and the historic and memorable location of the "Old Warehouse" in Roscoe Village. "It just seemed like a good fit," they thought.

The "LEGENDARY" Stein Onion Rings, Pinwheel Steaks and Fried Pork Tenderloin sandwiches of the "Steak n' Stein" brings back memories of just how good sharing great food, drink and fun with friends and family can be.

Welcome to P.R. Nye's Lock 27!

Casual Pub Dining

This "lock level" tavern has been a favorite "gathering spot" for canal boat captains and travelers for many years.

Some say, late in the wee hours of the night you can still hear someone singing Captain Nye's popular canaltown songs. For those who can't, you can still enjoy live music on the weekends, daily drink specials. multiple televisions for watching sports and games, digital internet jukebox and electronic games including Golden Tee 2010.

All this and the legendary food and fun of the "The Steak n Stein"!

So come join us at a place where great canalboat captains would gather; share their poetry of the canal era, write and enjoy good song and music and of course the camaraderrie of the "canaltown tavern."

Lock 27 Tavern
Captain Pearl R. Nye was born on a canalboat February 5, 1872 as one of 18 children. His family boat was known up and down the canal as "Bill Nye's Circus." Singing was a popular passtime back then and P.R. noted that "song and music were used as a mind developer." Many of the over 400 songs written by Captain Nye were greatly requested at these singing get-to-togethers.

When the canals closed in 1913, Captain Nye burned his boat and took up shorelife at Lock 27, near
Roscoe Village. Life was never the same for this "scrapper" and the last of the canalboat captains. His colorful life provides the perfect namesake for our "canaltown tavern."

The Lock provides a place to enjoy the things this great canalboat captain loved; the poetry of the canal era, writing and enjoying good song and music and of course the camaraderrie of the "canaltown tavern."

King Charley's Tavern
Legend has it that when the original proprieter of the first Roscoe Village Tavern, Charley, would hear visitors and bar patrons toast "God Save the Queen,"  he would promptly and physically escort them out of his tavern, proclaiming  "I am the King of my Tavern!  Patrons were required to call him "King Charley" especially since it was his tavern and not the Queen's. Anyone not recognizing him as the King in is kingdom was expeditiously expelled from the establishment.

IT'S GOOD TO BE THE KING!
